Melbourne Art Trams

Part of Visual Arts series.

PRESENTED BY MELBOURNE FESTIVAL, ARTS VICTORIA AND YARRA TRAMS

Following its debut in 2013, the Melbourne Art Trams project returns for its second year, thanks to a creative partnership between Melbourne Festival, Yarra Trams and Arts Victoria.

A revival of the popular Transporting Art project that ran between 1978 and 1993, Melbourne Art Trams once again populates Melbourne’s iconic tram network with moving works of art.

From the opening of this year’s Festival, 8 trams from 8 depots running across 21 different routes will be transformed, as we invite some of the state’s most innovative visual artists to use our most famous residents as their canvas.

Featuring both established and emerging artists, Melbourne Art Trams showcases some of Victoria’s brightest artistic talents, in a vibrant celebration of a vehicle that has become an emblem of Australia’s premier arts city.

This year's artists are: Jeff Makin, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Kristin Headlam, James Cattell, Christian Thompson, Janine Daddo, Rone and emerging artist Callum Croker. Read the artist's statements here.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
Callum Croker's Parrot Tulip Tram (pictured) has won the 2014 People's Choice Award, as voted by the general public. He has won a $5,000 cash prize.
