22 Years of Big hART

A FILM RETROSPECTIVE

Part of Big hART Events series.

PRESENTED BY BIG HART AND ACMI IN ASSOCIATION WITH MELBOURNE FESTIVAL

There are very few arts companies like Big hART – an organisation that embodies the belief that making great art while also creating social change is not only a possibility, but a vital necessity.

Throughout its 22-year history, Big hART has created a remarkable body of film and documentary works that give voice to our nation’s invisible and forgotten. These two engaging programs of film present highlights from the Big hART archives.

PROGRAM 1
Hurt (2000) 52 mins
Challenging, haunting and uplifting, this AFI Award–winning docu-drama handed the film making reins to 250 youths from isolated towns in rural Australia, giving them the chance to tell their stories in their own way.

900 Neighbours (2006) 56 mins
This documentary tells the story of a unique collaboration, as residents of Sydney’s notorious Northcott public housing estate work together to create a community theatre work, in an effort to change people’s perceptions about their home.

Big hART Shorts 1 55 mins
A diverse program of shorts from the Big hART archive.

PROGRAM 2
Drive (2002) 55 mins
North-west Tasmania has the highest road fatality rate in Australia for under-24 year olds. This documentary, made in collaboration with teens from the region, explores the network of consequences such tragedies leave in their wake.

Nothing Rhymes with Ngapartji (2010) 56 mins
In this fascinating documentary acclaimed Pitjantjatjara actor Trevor Jamieson grapples with his relationship to traditional boriginal culture, when he takes his hit theatre show Ngapartji Ngapartji to the remote Aboriginal community of Ernabella, South Australia.

Big hART Shorts 2 55 mins
A diverse program of shorts from the Big hART archive.

All proceeds go to Big hART’s Yijala Yala Project’s ‘One in Two’, a campaign to address the fact that every second young person in juvenile detention in Australia is Indigenous.
