Haydn Open House

Part of Haydn for Everyone series.

FEATURING MEMBERS OF CORPUS MEDICORUM

Encounter the magic of Haydn’s string quartets in a remarkable new setting: inside one of Melbourne’s most iconic homes.

Haydn Open House invites you into Chadwick House, designed by architect Harold Desbrowe-Annear in 1903, to experience Haydn’s works as they were intended to be heard – in intimate surrounds, played with verve by local musicians from amateur orchestra Corpus Medicorum.

Over the last 20 years, Peter Crone, architect and owner of Chadwick House, has lovingly restored this perfect example of the arts and crafts design style. As part of this event Crone gives a short talk on the significance of this special piece of Melbourne architectural history.

This special, one-off event frees the audience to admire the architectural delights of the venue, enjoy the complimentary snacks and drinks on offer, or simply to sit back and appreciate the music. Immersive, impromptu and full of surprises, this is an intimate, behind-the-scenes tour of both Haydn’s works and a piece of Melbourne architectural history.

Repertoire

Haydn String quartet No 54 op 71 no 1
Haydn String quartet No 55 op 71 no 2

FURTHER INFORMATION

If you are attending Chadwick House as part of Haydn Open House, you may also be interested to see the outside of other houses of interest in the area. Architect Harold Desbrowe Annear also designed another two houses in close proximity to Chadwick House, Desbrowe Annear House and  The Annear House. In nearby Outlook Drive, another example of his work can be seen.  Another property of interest in the area (1km away from Chadwick House) is Ravenswood, a great example of a Renaissance Revival mansion of the boom period in Victoria. These are all private houses though, so we would ask that privacy is respected and that they are viewed from outside the property boundaries.

Eaglemont itself has a fascinating history, including its association with the Heidelberg School of Art. You may like to find out more about a Walking Tour of Eaglemont or see more information on the Heidelberg School Artists Trail. These are not Melbourne Festival run events, but may simply be of interest.
