Ireland+USA Music

The Gloaming

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

PRESENTED BY Melbourne Festival

In just a few short years, this Irish-American supergroup, comprising members of Irish folk royalty such as Afro Celt Sound System and Masters of Tradition, has wholly redefined the sound of traditional Irish music.

Fusing the rhythms and reels of Celtic tradition with a palette that sweeps from post-rock to indie-folk, they conjure raw, haunting, windswept tunes.

A transcendent collaboration between four of Ireland’s greatest virtuosos – award-winning fiddler Martin Hayes (Artistic Director of Masters of Tradition), Afro Celt Sound System vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird (also a member of Masters of Tradition), Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (Hardanger fiddle) and Dennis Cahill (guitar and member of Masters of Tradition) – along with acclaimed US indie rock producer and pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman - who has worked with The NationalJulia Stone and Antony and The Johnsons amongst others), The Gloaming is Ireland’s sound of now: a music that builds from the loam and ends in the stars.

“Steeped in traditional Celtic influences but bravely contemporary... exquisite.”

The Guardian

“A very organic modern album. And it’s brilliant.”

Mojo

“Breathtaking, groundbreaking, grandstanding... This is music which has taken hundreds of years to reach this point.”
