Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier was an American street photographer, who was born in New York City and spent much of her childhood in France. After returning to the United States, she worked for approximately forty years as a nanny in Chicago, Illinois. During her lifetime she produced more than 100,000 photographic self-portraits and streetscapes of everyday Chicago and surrounds, which remained undiscovered until 2007, two years before her death.

Melbourne Festival is pleased to present two exciting events that tell the full story of this enigmatic and fascinating photographer: the film Finding Vivian Maier and a free exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) Crossing Paths with Vivian Maier, juxtaposing Maier’s images with other contemporary Australian photographic, performance and video works.
