Haydn for Everyone

PRESENTED BY MELBOURNE FESTIVAL, JOHN AND JANET CALVERT-JONES AND THE BRENDA SHANAHAN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

CURATED BY RICHARD TOGNETTI AO & MARSHALL MCGUIRE

After a phenomenal debut season in 2013, Melbourne Festival’s much acclaimed three-year program returns, presenting a vital celebration of Franz Joseph Haydn and the musical form he pioneered: the string quartet.

Across three years, this ambitious program will see Melbourne Festival present all of Haydn’s 68 string quartets. But Haydn for Everyone is much more than a Haydn retrospective – it is a magnificent exploration of the string quartet throughout history. Featuring a wide-ranging program of concerts, recitals, intimate soirees and masterclasses, it embraces the work of a whole range of composers who drew inspirations from Haydn’s innovation – including the works of such masters as Shostakovich, Dvořák, Mozart and Mendelssohn, along with the premieres of sparkling recent pieces.

Bringing together some of the world’s finest composers and chamber musicians, Haydn for Everyone is a panoramic survey of a musical revolution – one that, having begun more than 250 years ago, still continues to this day.
